The Ancestral Origin
The history of the family is anchored by the patriarch **Alfa Abu Bakr Al-Barnawi**, who migrated from the historic Kanem-Bornu Empire—one of the oldest surviving Islamic empires in African history. Titled *Alfa*, Abu Bakr Al-Barnawi was originally of Kanuri descent. His migration to Lagos Island occurred circa **1825**, where he established himself and settled in the Oko-Awo area.
Abu Bakr Al-Barnawi built the historical Oko-Awo Mosque in **1832**, serving as its first Imam. He later rose to serve as the Chief Imam of the Lagos Central Mosque from 1881 until his passing, marking a permanent legacy in Lagos clerical history.
The Clerical Dynasty
The patriarch Alfa Abu Bakr Al-Barnawi gave birth to **Imam Muhammed Nollah**, a revered cleric who went on to become the third Chief Imam of the Lagos Central Mosque. Sheikh Muhammed Nollah was born in the Oko-Awo area of Lagos Island in 1799. He led the community with wisdom and helped lay the foundations of the family's deep roots in clerisy and community leadership.
Sheikh Muhammed Nollah’s lineage flourished through **Imam Muhammed Ligali** (born 1867), who succeeded his forebears in service and spiritual leadership. Under Imam Muhammed Ligali, the lineage expanded, establishing branches of descendants who continue to carry the family legacy and values of heritage, trade, clerical service, and scholarship.

This digital family portal has been commissioned to map out, catalog, and make accessible the generations of descendants of Sheikh Muhammed Nollah and Imam Muhammed Ligali. Through interactive visualizations of the family tree and chronological timeline indexes, we preserve our lineage details, place records, and historical notes.
By empowering family descendants to propose corrections and updates, this platform remains a living, evolving testament to our ancestors' history, ensuring that the legacy of the Ligali Nollah dynasty is preserved for generations to come.
